Koffi Annan is the hope of many
Koffi Annan is the hope of many
“We must not succumb to
frustration. I believe we can break the current stalemate and make
new strides towards peace” These were the word of Mr. Koffi
Annan on 12th December 2006, while addressing the Security
Council Meeting intended to push for peace in the Middle East.
Koffi Annan is a peace maker and a
diplomat. Born in Kumasi to Victoria and Henry Reginald on Friday
earned him his name. Koffi is the name given to a baby boy born on
Friday in the Akan tribes of Ghana.
Many years down the line Annan rose to
become the first black African to occupy office of the UN Secretary
–General after taking over from his predecessor Boutros
Boutros-Ghali of Egypt on 1st January 1997.
Many believed that Koffi Annan would
steer the UN to the realization of better and peaceful world. Indeed
that was confirmed on 10th December 2001 when Mr. Annan
and the United Nations were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Price for
their efforts and success.
Mr. Annan therefore is the hope of many
as he embarks on leading a group of eminent persons that are tasked
with restoring peace and sanity in Kenya after more that a month of
post-election crisis. He has the backing of the United States of
America, The United Kingdom. The European Union, the African Union,
the Kenyan People and all other development partners around the
world.
Everybody is hoping that the warring
groups on both sides of the political divide would accord Mr. Anna
the respect he commands globally and go by what he shall require of
them.
In Kenya, for instance street protests
have subsided since the talks began. It is quiet at least for now.
All sectors in the country are affected, the tourism sector is worst
hit, with the major tourist companies in Europe canceling hotel
bookings and major airlines diverting to other safe destinations. The
agriculture sector is not spared either, with farmers abandoning
their crops in the fields as they flee to safe areas.
The Kilindini Port which serves as an
entry point for good to the Uganda, southern Sudan, Rwanda and Congo
is not reliable because of the logistic hiccups on the way to those
destinations. It is reported that the port is making loses and might
lose out its customers to Dar-es-salaam Port based in Tanzania.
It is now quiet as Kenya and the world remain in a wait and see attitude.
