Some remand prisoners yesterday hailed the Prisons Department for introducing new buses to ferry them to and from the courts saying the transport system was comfortable. They told the 'Daily News' at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court in Dar es Salaam that the buses used to ferry them from remand prisons at Keko and Segerea were very goo
This reflects our president’s commitment to improve the handling of prisoners. We congratulate him and his entire government for this treatment,” said Ramadhani Kondo. Others including Elias Asukuwe, Abu Amin and Daniel Peter, all from Keko prison expressed satisfaction over the way prison officers were handling them.

The Minister for Home Affairs, Mr Lawrence Masha, last Friday launched the new transport system which places the responsibility of taking inmates to and from the court under the prisons department instead of the police. Mr Masha said the new system would be implemented in two phases.

The first phase to cover three years, he said, was estimated to cost 18bn/-, while the second one would depend on the government’s budgetary allocation.
According to him, the government allocated 2bn/- during 2006/2007 financial year for implementation of the project and that four buses, four minibuses and six escort vehicles that would be used in the city had been procured. He said the money covered training of 270 prison officers, purchase of the vehicles, security and communication equipment and construction of temporary houses for 120 prison officers.
