Nuclear Waste Accumulates Near Hospitals

As the threat of Nuclear Terrorism grows- the handlers of Nuclear Waste Materials must find safer means of storing by-products of Nuclear Reactions. Seanna Adcox of the Associated Press reports that Rick Jacobi, a nuclear waste expert said- `Instead of safely secured in one place, it`s (nuclear waste) stored in thousands of places in urban locations all over the United States.`` He noted further- `They`ll end up offered up on eBay and flea markets and sent to landfills, or metal recycling plants- places where you don`t want to be.`
Since millions of radioactive gadgets exist in the market place- experts indicate that plans for their elimination currently fails to come on line. At this time, handlers of Medical Nuclear waste set it aside in a facility deemed as safe until it stops emiting radio activity. This process takes a number of years. Following the above mentioned procedure- the owners of the nuclear waste may then eliminate it as ordinary trash.
According to a 2003 finding of the General Accounting Office- Nuclear Waste handlers cannot list the number facilities they utilize nationally. Gregory Jaczko, one of the Nuclear Regulatory Commissioners, stated that- `I don`t think we`re yet in crisis, but certainly there`s information out there to suggest we may be closer to that than is comfortable for me.`
