It has been reported for a long time that most of the Doctors have been accepting gifts from pharmaceutical companies. This topic has been discussed in Times of India dated Mar 14, 10. Medical Council of India has decided to punish such Doctors who accept these gifts. This could be in the nature of payment of fine to suspension of their licence for one year or more. The name of the Doctor and the punishment given to him by MCI will be available on the web site, even after his name is restored. The proposal is awaiting clearance from Health Ministry. This includes gifts, travel facilities or any other hospitality from the drug industry. Gifts up to Rs. 1,000 can be accepted, but for those between Rs. 1,000 to 5,000 there will be censure. For gifts between Rs. 5,000 to 10,000 ranges, punishment is removal for three months. For gifts over Rs. 1, 00,000 it will be for one year. Similar penalties have been planned for travel facilities, hospitality, cash, and monetary grants. For those repeating the offences, the quantum of punishment will be higher. But state councils can give more punishments. Helpline, e-mail address besides a separate section in MCI are being arranged to tackle it.
