By: Tommy Elder, Jr.
Following a salvo that blasted Republican Politicians- the GOP controlled United States Congress intends to enact an Immigration Reform Law. This legislation precipitated a firestorm in the congress that caused such a contentious situation that some of the Republican Delegation sought political protection.
According to Johathan Weisman of the Washington Post- the Republicans moved to right their current slide in the polls due to their mishandling of this issue. House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist sid `It remains our intent to produce a strong border security bill that will not make unlawful the presence of Illegal Aliens in the United States a felony.`
Many people from the Hispanic Community became so incensed with this Congressional action that they organized a national demonstration to exert pressure on politicians in this crucial Election Year.
Speaking in reference of the Immigration Bill winding its way toward the United States Senate- Massachusetts Senator Edward Kennedy said- `There`s no running away from the fact that the Republican House passed a bil and Senator Frist offered one that criminalizes immigrants.`
Many members of congress felt that the House version of the bill solved the issue of Immigration. Some Georgia Republican Representatives spoke out with accolades for the House version. A Republican Leader in the House said- `I`d say we have not gotten sufficient credit.` He continued- `I`m somewhaqt distressed that they have not gotten word (on) what we`ve done.`
Following massive national protests in support of Immigrant Rights- this writer contends that backers of Immigration Law Reform saw the chatoic situation created by the current Immigration Procedures. It appears that the national leadership finally intends to take some positive actions. If the United States Senate supports the House version of the Immigration Bill- a beginning toward a fairer policy will start.
