Yahoo! is taking up the challenge with Google and Microsoft to make people come to it to search. With Google leading in search and Microsoft soaring high with its one or the other new product (it had however missed out on the anti piracy software, which is now being accomplished by TCS), it has become inevitable for Yahoo! to jump in the fray.
Though among the top brands, Yahoo! lagged behind in the search segment, during the past couple of years, with the result that it lost quite a bit of ground to Google.
Yahoo! with its half a million users generating billions of emails daily is trying hard to make people come to it to search. David Filo, co-founder of Yahoo! has admitted Google’s strength in search and therefore investing a lot in refining this technology to convince people to come to it for search.
Filo also observed that the very beauty of the internet is that any one with a good idea can spring surprise and become a competitor. Ten years ago it was said that Yahoo! will not be able to compete with Microsoft. The people who degraded it had the resources to make Yahoo! irrelevant. Yet Yahoo! survived all and came on top to be one among the most endearing brands.
To fight back, Yahoo! is working to take search beyond what it is today. Aspects like personalized search, social search, developing focused crawling techniques are on the agenda of Yahoo!
