Of all the five senses, sight is the most important. However with scientific revolution we are confronted with major eye problems due to daily use of computers and television. As regular exercises and balanced diet is important to maintain good health, similarly proper care and exercises are important to overcome major eye problems such as headache, eyestrain, and pain around the eyes, blurred vision, watering or running of letters after reading for sometime. Dr. Mahipal Sachdev, chairman and Medical Director of Centre for Sight, suggests following exercises to reduce eyestrain.Palming: Rub your hands rigorously until they are warm. Place your cupped palms on the closed eyes, without applying any sort of pressure on your eyeballs. Do deep breathing and relax for 3-5 minutes. Uncover and repeat palming for 3 or more minutes.Convergence Exercise: It is the most common exercise suggested by doctors. In the first step hold a pencil at an arms length. Move the pencil towards your nose; continue gazing until you are not able to focus on the pencil. This exercise strengthens eye muscles; repeat this exercise for at least 10 times.Change of focus: Try to focus on a distant object for few seconds and then refocus on a closer object for few seconds, probably at an arm’s length distant from you. Again go back to the distant object. This exercise should be done for five times. It is however advisable to consult your doctor before you practice eye exercises. Exercises should not be done with contact lenses and pressure should not be applied on eyes. Regular eye-exercises for few days will make your eyes more shining and relaxed.
