OGONI/SHELLThe Movement for the Survival of Ogoni People has refused to enter into any memorandum of understanding with the Federal Government of Nigeria and the multi-national Oil Company Shell on the return of Shell to Ogoni land because, according to the organisation, no credible discussion has taken place on the unresolved matter between shell and the Ogonis.Reacting to a media report credited to Reverend Matthew Kukah, the mediator in the Ogoni/Shell misunderstanding which gave the impression that a memorandum of understanding would soon be signed between the Ogonis and the other parties involved. The organisation described the report as a congratulation for a failed attempt. In a statement signed by the Information Officer of the Ogoni Organisation, Bari Kpalap said: “There has not been one single attempt of a meeting between the contending parties. If it is a case of self congratulation for a failed attempt to achieve a predetermined outcome of forcing Shell on the Ogoni people without resolution of outstanding critical issues, then it is a dangerous past time”The statement further stressed that “Facts abound that the Ogoni people in September, 2006 reaffirmed its position that she will have noting to do with Shell and called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to consider allocating the Ogoni Oil concession to a new operator if it wishes to extract our oil. We therefore not see how Ogoni can enter into such memorandum of understanding with shell and her friends when no credible discussion has taken place and our people are resolute on not having anything to do with shell. The group warned all including Ogonis who are collaborators of Shell in the process that they will be held squarely responsible for any crisis arising from the attempts.
