Petaling Jaya: It was told by Perlis Mufti Dr Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin that Muslims need not worry about using cutlery in the homes of their non-Muslim friends. As long the food served is halal, there should be no worries because some Muslims do use reserved cups, utensils and plates in their non-Muslim friend’s home. According to Dr Asri, these Muslims feared that the utensils might be “tainted” with non-halal substances but such concerns were unfounded and is not necessary for Muslims to be unreasonably cautious about this. In response to a question posed by a reader in the Mufti’s Weekly Column on mStar Online, the Malay news portal of The Star, he asked “What’s the use of visiting a non-Muslim’s home if we can’t eat or drink there?” Dr Asri is disappointment with such misconception that he described it as “rubbish”.
