Indian doc bags top US award Every youngster wants to be in the Indian Institute of Technology(IIT) ,But Vikram Sheel Kumar couldn’t stay in one beyond a year. Instead of a B Tech in textile engineering at IIT Delhi ,he went off to Columbia University to finish a B Tech in Industrial engineering and then joined Harvard Medical School. As the chief resident of ethical pathology there, the Modern School pass out is all set to make history. On September 17,he will join the ranks of Bill Clinton ,John D Rockefeller ,John F Kennedy ,Richard Nixon ,Henry Kissinger, entrepreneur Henry Ford and rock legend Elvis Presley as a recipient of the Ten Outstanding Young Americans award Vikram ,29,will be the first Indian American to receive the award. Besides his family ,the news has also thrilled Vikram mentor and idol President A P J Abdul Kalam .For the past two years ,Vikram has been keeping the technology savvy President posted of his scientific activities over E-mail .Kalam,in turn has been replying to his mails ,pepping him to go on, Kalam also met him and his family during Vikram trip to India last year. Vikram father Vijay Sheel Kumar who is leaving for Boston on Thursday night to attend the award Ceremony ,is also carrying a congratulatory note from the President for Vikram. Which President replies to every email that is sent to him? Kalam is an idol for many budding scientists .Vikram will be thrilled to receive the congratulatory note from the President,Vijay Sheel Kumar said.Vikram is also president of Dimagi ,which develops hand-held devices to improve healthcare systems, Vikram recently created a smart card for expectant mothers in Zambia which had the health history of the patient stored in it. Indian doctors are making their mark all over the world by their outstanding achievements in their contributions in surgeries and pediatric surgery.
