Plant physiology is one of the many branches of biological science that studies plant function. Though a varied number of books are available on this topic, I highly recommend “Plant Physiology” by “Salisbury and Ross”. A great deal of information has been presented in the book. The foremost chapter of the book covers plant cell, which is the structural and functional unit of life. The rest of the text is divided into 4 sections. The first seven chapters (Section 1) deal with physical processes, the middle seven chapters (Section 2) with metabolism and biochemistry and the eight chapters of Section 3 with growth and development. The last two chapters (Section 4) discuss the influence of environment on plant system. The most informative and enjoyable part of the book are the guest essays by several eminent plant physiologists. These great essays are based on their personal experiences and are the most aspiring for the new researches as well. SI units have been used considerably throughout the book. References which are an essential part of the scientific literature have been covered in the end of the book. Thus, this book is highly recommended for both graduate and undergraduate students. it is a must for all libraries

  1. Answer  :    Photorespiration occurs when the CO2 levels inside a leaf become low. This happens on hot dry days when a plant is forced to close its stomata to prevent excess water loss. If the plant continues to attempt to fix CO2 when its stomata are closed, the CO2 will get used up and the O2 ratio in the leaf will increase relative to CO2 concentrations. When the CO2 levels inside the leaf drop to around 50 ppm, Rubisco (an enzyme) starts to combine O2 with RuBP (a sugar) instead of CO2. Tuesday, May 24, 2011
