Simtokha Dzong is oldest Dzong of
the valley. It was built by the first king of Bhutan
named Shabdrung Nawang Namgyel in the year 1627. It is located about 8 km away
from the main city and regarded as the gateway of Thimphu
Valley. The place is also known as
the centre for spiritual studies and Buddhist culture.
Memorial Chorten is the memorial
of Third King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk of Kingdom
of Bhutan. It was made in 1974 in
his memory after their death in year of 1972. This chorten preserves some very
old and important spiritual paintings, images and carving related to the
Buddhist religion and culture.
