Junagadh is a beautiful spot in the heart of the Gir forests Junagadh is connected by rail to Ahmedabad and other big
cities and by plane to Mumbai. There are a number of interesting places in
Junagadh meaning old fort; itself and one can go on short excursions in the
surrounding areas.
One can climb up the Girnar Hill, in Junagadh, to see the
temples at the top, if one does not mind watery knees the next day. It is a
place of pilgrimage for Jains and Hindus. Two thousand feet high on the Hill
are situated five Jain temples of varying antiquity. The biggest shrine is that
of Neminath, dating back to AD 12th century. A big fair is held on Kartika Purnima
(full moon) here. Further up are some Hindu temples. Other places of interest
in Junagadh are the Uparkot Fort, Asoka’s rock –cut edicts on the way to
Girnar, the tombs of the Nawabs of the Junagadh and the shrine of Narsinh
Mehta, the poet-saint of Gujarat.
About 160 km from Junagadh is a beautiful spot in the heart
of the Gir forests- the Tulsishyam hot springs. There is a shrine by the hot
springs and some interesting legends about the place. Buses ply between
Junagadh and Tulsishyam everyday and there is a government holiday home.
