Suaka Margasatwa Muara Angke and Suaka Margasatwa Pulau
Rambut are two oases amidst the hubbub of Jakarta. Both of them are located in
Jakarta Utara. The first is kicated in Pantai Indah Kapuk, while the latter is
located in Kepulauan Seribu
Suaka Margasatwa
Muara Angke (SMMA)
Located in front of Ruko Mediteranea
in Pantai Indah Kapuk,SMMA is really an oasis in Jakarta. The gate to this area
is separates shoopong place, hectic traffic, and other big-city elements from the
wonderfully quiet and green nature preserve. As soon as you enter the area, you’ll
see the greenery of specific wetland plants,like some kinds of mangrove trees (Rhizophora Mucronata,Rhizopora Apiculata),api-api(Avicennia spp.),pidada(Sonneratia Caseolaris),ketapang(Terminalia Catappa),and nipah(Nypa Fruticans).Some long-tall monkeys(Macaca Fascicularis)can also be seen
frolicking in the trees.
The Dutch Government established
this place as natural conservation back in 1939.In 1988,this mangrove forest
was listed as a natural conservation by government of Indonesia.
With a total area 25.02 ha,this
area is the smallest natural conservation in Indonesia.Despite its small
size,SMMA plays an important role in preserving plant and animal
species, especially birds. An international organization that concerns walfare of
all birds,Bird Life International,Mentions SMMA as one of the Important Bird
Areas (IBA) in Java.Examples of the kinds of birds that can be found here are
pecuk-padi kecil(Phalacrocorax Niger)
and kowak malam kelabu(Nyticorax
Nyticorax).
Suaka Margasatwa
Pulau Rambut (SMPR)
Located
in Kepulauan Seribu,SMPR can be reached by taking a boat from SMMA or Tanjung
Pasir, near Soekarno-Hatta Airport. The trip that takes about 30 minutes will be
very enjoyable since you can see sea birds sunbathing or hunting for food.
White sandy beaches, green mangrove forests, and various kinds
of sea birds are the things that make this place attractive.Yes,even though we
can find other animals-snake and lizards, among others—besides birds
there, still, the population of birds outnumbers the population of other animal.
The mangrove forest that save the island from abrasion is
also a home for sea birds. That’s why Pukau Rambut is also known as a heaven for
watching birds there.Just climb the stairs and you can watch the birds or take
shots of them taking a rest on a bed of mangrove trees.
Pulau Rambut was first proposed as a conservation area
during the Dutch colonization.
This birds sanctuary was established as natural reservation
in 1937.Then,in 1999,the Indonesian government changed the status of the 90ha
area into an animal conservations.
