Khan Younis
Khan Younis is the largest city
in the Gaza Strip; is the second largest city in terms of population;
approximately 200,000 inhabitants reside in Khan Younis half of them are
refugees, Khan Younis has an area of 54 km2. It is the capital and
commercial center of the south; it has most of the governmental institutions
which serve the southern region.
Khan Younis is a costal city
which depends on agriculture and trade, it is expected to occupy a significant
role in tourism where its coastline has a picturesque nature. In the city
center Khan Younis embraces Barkok Castle which was constructed by the Mamluks
for the traders rest between Egypt and Syria and vice versa, Khan Younis is
well known with its popular market; "Wednesday Market", it is one of
the most active commercial markets in Palestine; more than ten thousand people
gathered and attended it where merchandise and goods from multiple countries,
notably the Gulf states, Turkey, Egypt, Asian countries and others are
presented to be sold.
Khan Younis is distinguished
with its moderate climate, fertile agricultural land and scenic landscapes.
During the Israeli occupation, the Israelis intended to plunder its land and
resources, especially Al-Mawasi area, which has fertile soil and high quality
of water wells. This area is the basket of vegetables and fruits which feeds
the cities and counties of the Gaza Strip; its bounties reached the surrounded
region, particularly in the various agricultural seasons.
Khan Younis Municipality plans
for the Advancement of the city which suits its history and the enormous
sacrifices of its residents, it worked in full swing to promote the city
through the design and implementation of projects that suits the city's
history, implemented multiple projects such street openings, organizing markets
and contributing to the improvement of water quality, along with the implementation
of further projects related to road and infrastructure improvement, the
municipality paid great attention to improving environmental conditions through
ongoing campaigns to plant trees, establish gardens and parks to entertain
citizens who will find a heavenly place to ease the siege worries and its
non-humanitarian subjections.
Additionally, the municipality
has implemented different parts and phases of the wastewater project which has
not yet been completed yet, It is the dream of the city's citizens and its only
obsession. However, Khan Younis is desperately in need of many vital projects
since it has been deprived of any assistance over the years of Israeli
occupation.
However, it is still in urgent
need to complete the wastewater project and the development of many of unpaved
streets, implementation of cultural and recreational projects that lack the
city as well as the establishment of parks that can meet the needs of different
population.
Finally, Khan Younis citizens
deeply appreciate the donor countries and organizations that have contributed
to the financing of vital projects in the city, Khan Younis municipality hopes
from all its friends that the city gets its share of moral and financial
support of its friendly donor countries and institutions to assist in vital
project implementation as well as the advancement of the city bitter realities.
