Rene Wellek and Austin Warren stated that one way is
to define literature as everything in print. And another way of defining
literature is to limit it to grat books, books which, whatever their subject, are
‘notable for literary form or expression’. And language is the material of
literature as stone or bronze is of sculpture, paints of picture, or sounds of
music.
Literature helps us to understand human sentiments,
human interests, human problems, and so on. It brings us closer to the other
human beings of other nationalities, cultures, races. Our lives become fuller
and more balanced, knowledge feeds our minds, literature feeds our heart, and
we learn to feel what others feel about certain things.
Novel is one of the literary works. It contains of all
the imaginations, the experience, or the life story of the writer. Reading
novel is part of our hobby, but some people who do not like reading novel, they
reading novel just to waste their time, to make them do an activity better then
they do nothing or become bored. Some of people also reading novel because they
have to do it, it means that they read novel because they are force by their
teacher or lecturer. All people have their own purpose in reading novel.
There are some advantages of reading novel, such as: it
can enrich his life because there are many kinds of literary experience on it;
it brings some motivations like wisdom, knowledge, cross cultural understanding
and new experience; it makes our understanding of the world deepens; it can
increase our sence of humanity and interrelationship. By reading novel, reader
also can learn idiom and get new vocabularies. They can also know the content
of the novel, what is the moral teaching of the novel; know the relationship
between the literary works and the author’s life and so on.
Based on the reality, there is relationship between
literary works with the author’s experience. The author’s life experience can
be used as the background of the story of the novel. Some of author use it
because it closely related with their life, they can easy to compose it, and
they can also want to share their life experiences.
Charles Dickens is one of the great novelists in England at the
Victorian era. There are so many works produced by Dickens that people know,
such as: Oliver Twist, Nicholas Nickleby,
A Crismast Carol, David copperfield (1849-1850), A tale of Two Cities, Great
Expectations, The Old Curiosity , Barnaby Rudge , Martin Chuzzlewit , The Chimes , Dombey and Son, The Battle
of Life , The Cricket and the
Hearth , The Haunted Man, Little
Dorrit , The Frozen Deep , Our Mutual Friend , The Mystery of Edwin Drood ,
and so on.
Great Expectations is one of literary works. It is
written by Charles Dickens. This novel shows the relationship between the
literary work and the author. It tells the readers about a village boy name Pip,
brought up with his violent tempered sister, the wife of the naturally gracious
blacksmith Joe Gragery. Expectation of wealth comes to him from a mysterious
benefactor. He leaves for London
and ungratefully alienates himself from the ever faithful Joe Gragery.
His
mysterious benefactor turns out to be the escaped convict, Abel Magwitch, whom
he, as a boy had given some food and a file Adversity overcomes Pip, his great
expectations fade away and he becomes a penniless gentleman. Pip comes back to
Joe Gragery and decides to live by honest labour Estella is widowed. She too
has learnt from adversity and is no longer a hater of the male-sex. Pip is finally
reunited to her unafraid of any other shadow of part.
In discussing the novel Great Expectation, the writer uses an expressive approach to
analize it. This approach is study about the relationship between the literary
work and the author.
