Anthony Howard died at 76 on Sunday in London after a short illness ... He was the Editor of The New Statesman and The Listener. He had retired from full time Journalism but he was a regular guest on political television programmes. His Speciality was the history of the Labour Party. He started as a political journalist but had trained as a barrister and worked for the Manchester Guardian and the Sunday Times and The Observer.
He did edit the New Statesman - 1972-1978 and commented on Lord Mandelson's Diaries

I have often listened and seen Anthony Howard during these years referred to online The Telegraph and I must admit I have sometimes at the University Libraries I belong to read some articles in the New Statesman. And for years I have subscribed to The Sunday Times, The Guardian, and The Observer as a regular reader from as far back as 1966 and even today I walked deep into the snow and ice in Hampshire to go to the local shop and buy a newspaper.
