The Influence of Using Direct Method toward the Development of Speaking Skill in Senior High School

Abstract:

Method is an overall plan for the orderly presentation of language material, no part of which contradicts, and all of which is based upon the sellected approach. There are several methods can be used in language learning, they are: the grammar translation method, the direct method, the audio lingual method, the suggestopedia, the silent way, the communicative approach, total physical response, community language learning. Direct method is a method which foreign language could be taught without translation or the use of the learner’s native language if meaning was conveyed directly through demonstration and action.

A. Introduction

In this globalization era, all the people in the world are prosecuted to mastering the international language of English. Most of the governments in the world make a decision that English is important for the future and decided that English as their second language (the language that they use or learn after their mother tongue). The general step that they take is that all the students must get English learning in some grade of the study. Some of them also decided that English must be their daily communicative language such as Singapore or Malaysia even that their first language is their mother tongue. But their daily communication is using English.

Indonesia also takes the same step with the other countries in the world. The government makes a new rule or improves the curriculum to improve the student’s skill in education and that is about mastering English and technology for the students so that they can prepare their achievements or skills in order to face the globalization era for the next generation.

Now that learning English in Indonesia start from the elementary school, but some of the kindergarten is also giving the English learning to prepare the students achievement for the next grade (elementary school).

Before using CBC (Curriculum Base Competence), the education in Indonesia used 1994 Curriculum that the purpose of the language teaching in Senior High School is to make the learners or the students can master four basic skills. They are speaking, listening, reading and writing. Those four basic skills should be covered in teaching learning English process. Every skill should have the proportion in language learning. According to Yamin (2004: 38) in CBC the purpose of language teaching is to make the students be able to practice those four skills. If in the 1994 Curriculum the teacher have an active role in teaching learning process but in CBC the student must be active and the teacher just as motivator or as guide for the students.

Language is speech, so it is very reasonable if speaking is in this case should become the first target and get more proportional than another three skills. But it can not be said that another three skills is not important in learning language. The ability of mastering speaking is urgent if we compared with another skills follow. But in fact that in the producing of English words or sentences in Senior High School is not an easy thing to do because most of them are having many difficulties in speaking skill.

Teacher as an educator, guide, consultant and motivator for the students should have a good and certain method in relation with the development of speaking skill in teaching learning process. The method of teaching will certainly influence the result of the subject that the teacher implies the better result will be. So teacher as an educator must develop or choose the most suitable method of teaching speaking in order that students can speak English fluently.

General students in senior high school still have problem in speaking. It is teacher’s duties to out the possible way out to solve the problem. To make a wider view of the problem, the writer will formulate the problem into:

1. What the method is used by the teacher in developing skills in class.

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the method used by the teacher in class?
