Elisa is a middle-age housewife who lived in an isolated farm. Her husband Henry managed a small farm which provided the people living in the village with cattle and other living stocks. Elisa was very skillful with gardening and she was very proud of that. Moreover, she really hoped that she could help her husband with the farm work. Although her husband was very considerate, he supported his wife’s career-the gardening, he never let her be involved in his own career.
The life of the small village was pretty dull. Elisa put all her energy in the garden, and she really had done a excellent job. One day, there came a repairman, who drove a ragged car. He stopped in front of Elisa’s house and asked her how to get to the Los Angeles. After Elisa showing him the way, they chatted a little. The repairman told Elisa about his free, non-settle life. He said, “ I aim to follow nice weather.” Hearing this, Elisa expressed her admiration toward it. Then the repairman began to do some selling. He asked Elisa whether she had some scissors or knives to fix. But Elisa had nothing to repair. Knowing this, he acted some exaggerate sorrow. And then, he noticed the garden of Elisa. He appraised the flowers and said he knew a lady, who loved gardening as same as Elisa, and he wanted to bring some seeds to that lady. Elisa was very happy to hear that, she got someone sharing the same interests with her, she got someone to communicate with. She gave some flowers and the seeds to the repairman. Besides she offered him some scissors to fix.
While fixing, the repairman told more details about his life, he told her what was the feeling when you slept in the car looking at the stars. Elisa was intoxicated about that, for a moment, she even couldn’t behave herself. She truly envied him for he could lead a real, excited life.
When the repairman had gone, Elisa was back to her normal life. Since previously, her husband had deal a big sale, they decided to go downtown and celebrate it. She began to make up. After dressing, she looked totally different. Actually, In daily life, she didn’t care about her appearance too much, besides, there weren’t many occasions to make up. When Henry when back home, neither did him notice the change about Elisa, nor expressed it satisfactorily. What’s worse, when Elisa implied a further intimated activity ( she wanted have sex with him), he didn’t react properly. Elisa felt nothing but disappointment.
They started out to the restaurant. On the way, she saw the flower she had given to the repairman were thrown on the road. At that moment, she felt not only angry but also disappointed—disappointed for herself, how silly she was that she should believe him. Disappointed for the “exhilarating life”—that must be a lie. No one can lead such a beautiful, colorful, and meaningful life. Everyone was just like her, living in an eternity dull life.
But something deep inside her mind has thrived. She wanted some change, she wanted involved in the farm, and not just do her gardening, she wanted experience the boxing fight which she used to reject. Then she asked Henry about it. her husband was surprise, and asked if she would like to go. But meanwhile, he expressed some disapproval.
After thinking a while, she gave up—she gave up not only the fight, but also the chance to change. With no doubt, she returned to her normal life- the dull, pale, unsatisfied normal life.
