BITS is not a University, but is a
Tech Institution par excellence with excellent research record ...
In a recent Outlook survey of top 100 engineering colleges in India,
BITS was ranked 6th after IIT Kanpur, IIT Karagpur, IIT Bombay, IIT Madras, IIT Delhi ahead of IIT Roorkee & IIT Gawhati which are fairly new entrants among IIT fold and also ITBHU which is a part
of IIT-JEE culture.
Although these rankings may keep changing
(moving few places up or down), it is a
significant fact that BITS has come to occupy this position among top ten in the recent times and
that too being the only private college among the top ten. That speaks volume about the college.
I considered it a
good college, but not such equivalent to IIT. I did my B Tech (Chem Engg) from ITBHU and when I had to choose which engineering college to go during my school days, I had three choices IIT, IIS (Bangalore) and BITS and my close friends also thought the same during that time
(that is nearly 30 years ago). Indian Institute of Science at Bangalore is surprisingly missing, but they may not have furnished the data, otherwise IIS is also considered a good tech college with excellent scientific and technical research record.
The Institute is founded by House of Birlas. The Institute occupies good reputation in Industry and trade. One of our professor in chemical
Engg (Chem Reaction Engg.) came from BITS and he was a good teacher and I liked him.
This is the closest as far as personal experience goes. BITS enjoys good
exchanges with Industry and it has been placed among
the top in Industry Interface (II). It is also among the top in Pedagogic Systems (PS) or Educational System or set up. In the technological front, the BITS, Alumni started OysterLab project with an investment of about 200 Crores. You can check about it at www.bitsaa.org. Thanks to Alumni.
